Wim Wenders used inspiration from Hopper’s work in his film Paris-Texas: Stopping in motion film, and motion in stationary perspectives. A story about ‘time’. Each painting has a story before it stops and appears to go further after the “picture” moment. What happened after that moment? Time seems stretched, his paintings were a resistance to modern alienation.
Are you in the mood for dancing? Just like in the good old days? We have a fantastic opportunity for you to try it again. Our pilot project Come, dance with me…the Danzón will start in March. This is a new initiative from Internationaal Danstheater, our educational partner Dans in School and the foundation Vier het Leven. It is a new initiative for and most of all with senior citizens aged 65 and older.
10 work sessions
Starting on 17 March you’ll take part in 10 dance work sessions. You will create a performance of half an hour during these sessions, under the guidance of two instructors. It will be your very own performance in the spirit of the new Cuban performance Danzón for Internationaal Danstheater, which will be in theaters across the Netherlands from 26 February until 31 May.
The work sessions take place on Thursday mornings from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. from 17 March to 26 May in the Doelenzaal in Amsterdam.
In addition to the work sessions, we organize a number of open Dance Salons on 28 March and 26 April in the Doelenzaal in Amsterdam. These will give you the opportunity to put what you’ve learned into practice! A dress rehearsal of your own performance will be held during the Friends Afternoon in the Doelenzaal on Sunday afternoon 29 May.
On Monday 30 May we’ll have a fantastic premiere in the Meervaart theatre in Osdorp. This performance will be followed by another Dance Salon.
Everyone age 65 and older is welcome to attend the Dance Salons! So bring your neighbors, friends, partners or family members. Admission is €7,50 including a drink.
The 10 work sessions, the performance and the Dance Salons together cost €22,50, since this is the very first time that we are doing this!
A total of 20 people can take part during this round.

After the overwhelming success of FADO, which was awarded the Public’s Choice Dance Award in 2014, and the acclaimed Crazy Blues, the International Danstheater presents the new performance Danzón, inspired by the eponymous music and dance style in Cuba.
Dancers of the Internationaal Danstheater take you, along with the Cuban pianist and composer Abel Marcel Calderón and his band, to the fascinating world of various Caribbean cultures. Danzón will premiere in the DeLaMar Theatre in Amsterdam on 7 March. A tour through the Netherlands follows.
Coming up: Kymani, the story of a drummer (6+) will premiere in Belgium in Cultuurcentrum de Adelberg in Lommel on October 10!
Kymani goes on a quest for his roots. He was adopted when he was a young child, and now he lives far away from his country of birth. He grows up in a class with students from different countries and learns about different cultures and traditions, but nowhere he feels at home. He hears Australian and Asian music, sees Irish and Indonesian dance, but only when he hears the drum, it touches his soul. He wants to be a drummer!
The Dutch premiere is on October 25 in theater de Meervaart in Amsterdam. Would you like to be there? Check the schedule and tickets.

A while back Lucie Sorel helped behind the scenes of the Internationaal Danstheater. She wrote about her experience in a blog: https://dancingacrossbordersblog.wordpress.com/
Thanks, Lucie, for the wonderful piece!
